Backup agent quick start guide

Overview

Backup add-on only
This article only applies to the backup agent. As a reminder, we are discontinuing support for the Incydr backup add-on, effective January 1, 2027. See our FAQ for more details.

Welcome to the data protection solution that stays out of your way while you work. To help protect your data from loss, Code42 automatically collects and stores every version of every file you have selected for backup across all your computers. When you need to recover a file or a version of a file, the Code42 agent makes it easy to browse, search, and restore files from all of the computers on your account.

Follow the three quick steps below to start protecting your files from loss, corruption, and unwelcome file changes.

Step 1: Install the Code42 agent

If the Code42 agent isn’t already installed on your computer (also known as a device), check with your administrator for download links and instructions. For step-by-step instructions, see our guide to installing the Code42 agent.

Step 2: Set up your backup

Your administrator may configure your Code42 agent to begin backing up immediately after you sign in to a computer for the first time. If your backup isn't already configured, the Code42 agent will prompt you to set up your first backup set.

  1. Click Add destinations. When you select a destination, select a cloud destination to ensure that your files are backed in the Code42 cloud.

  1. Select Manage Files to add files to your backup set.
Choosing files for backup
Typically, backing up your user folder is the best way to ensure that the majority of your personal files (documents, downloads, pictures, etc.) are backing up. For more information, see our best practices for choosing what to back up.
Adjust memory settings
If your backup selection exceeds 1 TB of storage (or 1 million files), adjust your Code42 agent settings to reduce the amount of memory required for backup.

Step 3: View backup status and download files

Now that you’re backing up, you can quickly view the status of your backup from the Code42 agent icon in your notification area (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).

This is also a great time to download a file from your backup so that you can see how it works.

  1. Open the Code42 agent.
  2. Go to your backed up files:
  1. Click Restore Files.
  2. (Applies only if you have multiple devices) From the menu, select the device that originally backed up the files you want to restore.
  1. Navigate to a file.Download icon
  2. Mouse over the file and click the download iconScreen_Shot_2015-08-27_at_3.18.20_PM.png.
Your download is added to Downloads with the default options. Download Activity displays the status of your download.
  3. Open Downloads and click Show folder Show Folder to open the folder containing your file.

That's it! It's safe to close the Code42 agent while your backup continues quietly, behind the scenes. If you turn your computer off, the Code42 agent will resume where it left off the next time you turn the computer back on.
