Overview

The Code42 agent is designed to help you protect your data with a secure and comprehensive backup strategy. We strongly believe you shouldn't rely on a single destination for backup, even our Code42 cloud. Back up to multiple destinations, both onsite and offsite, to protect your data so that you can recover it if disaster strikes.

Consider the following options for backing up to multiple destinations.

Onsite and offsite backups

Destinations can either be onsite, meaning the destination is located in the same physical location as the device it backs up, or offsite, meaning the destination is stored in a physical location separate from the device it backs up.

A comprehensive backup strategy includes backing up to multiple destinations, so while your files are stored safely in the Code42 cloud, you also have a local copy available for quick access. With the Code42 agent, you can back up to a drive on or attached to your device as well as the Code42 cloud, or to any combination of these destinations.

Create a comprehensive backup strategy

Backing up your data to multiple destinations that are both on and offsite gives you a solid disaster recovery plan for your data. You should back up to both:

  • Offsite destinations: such as a Code42 cloud destination.
  • Onsite destinations: such as a local internal hard drive or an external hard drive.

This way, you have a complete backup no matter what the circumstance, and have redundancy if one backup destination is inaccessible or damaged.

Using backup sets to manage destinations
Using backup sets, you can fine-tune the files backed up to each destination. For example, if you have information you want stored in only one location, or a couple of files you need backed up only once a week instead of continuously, you can tailor the Code42 agent's settings to your needs.

Destination options

Destinations Advantages
Onsite

Speed and Protection

  • Faster backups. Backing up to an internal hard drive or to an external drive takes less time than sending your files over the Internet.
  • Faster restores. Restoring files from an onsite backup destination is faster than from an offsite one.
  • Convenient. A local destination is convenient when you need to recover from a device crash and need to restore a lot of files.
Offsite

Access and Protection

  • No single point of failure. Because problems like theft, fire, natural disaster, power outages, or even Internet connection issues typically affect all the devices in a single location, backing up to offsite destinations reduces your risk of data loss and ensures you'll always be able to access your files when you need them.
  • Out of harm's way. Having offsite destinations as part of your backup strategy ensures that you can retrieve your files in the event of a disaster that affects an entire facility or region.
