A great backup solution is one that you don’t notice until you need it. That’s why Code42 for Enterprise is designed to work continuously, use resources efficiently, and protect your files securely. This guide provides an overview and step-by-step tutorials on backing up. These articles assume you’ve already reviewed our getting started guide.
Which files are backing up?
To see what you are backing up, go to Details and click Manage Files for a backup set. You can see files included and excluded from your backup in the left column:
- A file, or a folder and all of its subfolders, is backing up.
- One or more subfolders within the folder is currently selected—but the folder itself is not backing up. When files or folders are added, they will not back up.
Typically, backing up your user folder is the best way to ensure that the majority of your personal files (documents, downloads, pictures, etc.) are backing up. For more information, see our best practices for choosing what to back up.
How often does the Code42 app back up?
You or your administrator can completely control your backup schedule, frequency, and version history:
- Schedule: We think it works best when the Code42 app is always running and watching for file changes, but you can set the schedule during which backup can run.
- Frequency: Within the schedule allowed, the Code42 app backs up changes at regular intervals based on your frequency setting (15 minutes by default, but you or your administrator can adjust this setting).
- Versions: Code42 for Enterprise offers generous retention settings for file changes and deleted files. You can adjust your version settings to fit your needs.
Will the Code42 app slow down my device?
The Code42 app conserves resources so that most users never even notice that it's running. You can also control the resources the Code42 app can use:
- CPU: We designed the Code42 app to use less CPU when you are using your device. You can adjust how much CPU the Code42 app is allowed to use from your usage preferences.
- Bandwidth: After your initial backup, the Code42 app only backs up changes you make to your files. This saves on bandwidth usage, but you can also adjust the rate at which the Code42 app sends data from your network preferences.
What's the status of my backup?
Code42 for Enterprise offers several methods for viewing your backup status in detail, at-a-glance, and via email:
- Detailed status: Open the Code42 app and click Details. The Details view includes information about the number of files already backed up, the number left to do, and the next time backup will run.
- At-a-glance: Select the Code42 icon in your Windows notification area or in the Mac menu bar to see high-level status details.
- Email: Your administrator may configure backup status reports that include details about your backup status. Additionally, you or your administrator can configure email alerts that notify you when your device hasn't backed up.
