If you are experiencing problems with the CrashPlan service, network communication, or have a corrupted cache file, uninstalling and reinstalling the CrashPlan app often helps to fix the issue.
Before You Begin
- Before performing an uninstall/reinstall, you should try clearing the cache first. This often fixes issues and is simpler and quicker to perform than uninstalling and reinstalling.
- You must uninstall the CrashPlan app before reinstalling; make sure you have completed all the steps to uninstall CrashPlan before beginning to reinstall it.
Step 1: Uninstall
These steps describe how to perform a standard uninstall, which leaves a small amount of information on your computer so CrashPlan can remember your computer when you reinstall.

You may be prompted that another user on the device is signed in. If another user is signed in, it may prevent the CrashPlan app from uninstalling completely. Code42 recommends coordinating with other users to ensure all users are signed out of the account before continuing.
If the uninstallation fails, follow Microsoft's instructions to fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed.

Performing a complete uninstall removes the CrashPlan identity file, meaning there is no trace of the previous installation. After completing the standard uninstall, follow the additional steps below only if instructed to do so by a Customer Champion.
If you or another user backs up to this computer, a complete uninstall permanently deletes all of the files backed up to this computer. Move the inbound backup archive to a new location if you plan to reinstall CrashPlan. The inbound backup folder has the following default location: If installed for everyone (default):
- Windows Vista, 7, 8, 10, Server 2008, And Server 2012: C:\ProgramData\CrashPlan\backupArchives
- Windows XP: C:\Program Files\CrashPlan\backupArchives
- OS X: /Library/Application Support/CrashPlan/backupArchives
- Linux: /usr/local/var/crashplan/
- Windows: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\<Local or Roaming>\CrashPlan\backupArchives
- OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/CrashPlan/backupArchives

Step 2: Install
- Download the latest version of CrashPlan for your operating system:
- Once the download completes, unzip the installer.
- Run the CrashPlan Installer:
- Windows: Double-click the CrashPlan EXE file.
- OS X: Double-click the CrashPlan DMG file, then double-click Install CrashPlan.
- Linux: Run the install.sh shell script.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
- Once the installation is complete, choose Existing Account on the sign in screen and enter your CrashPlan account information.

After you sign in, the CrashPlan app begins a file verification scan: CrashPlan inspects your file selection for any new, changed, or deleted files. Your backup continues from its previous state.
Adopting After Reinstalling
In some cases, most often after performing a complete uninstall, you may need to perform the adoption process in order to reconnect your computer to your existing backup.
