Overview

This article provides a solution to a known issue with the CrashPlan app on Ubuntu where the Settings > Backup tab appears blank when opened from the Unity launcher.

Affects

The CrashPlan app on Ubuntu when launched from the Unity launcher.

Under the hood

When adding an application to the Unity launcher, Ubuntu generates a shortcut based on what it reads from the process table. The process table omits GUI toolkit settings that are required to fully render the CrashPlan app.

Recommended solution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Close the CrashPlan app.
  2. Right-click CrashPlan in the Unity launcher.
  3. Click Unlock from Launcher.
  4. Open the CrashPlan app from the desktop shortcut.

If the desktop shortcut is unavailable, CrashPlan can be launched from terminal with the following command:
/usr/local/crashplan/bin/CrashPlanDesktop
