This tutorial explains how to restore your entire iTunes library, including your music, videos, and other media, as well as the library and settings files that contain your playlists, play counts, ratings, and comments.
Information about products from other manufacturers is intended as a resource to help you get the most out of Code42 products. - iTunes stores playlists, ratings, and other information about your iTunes content in two iTunes Library files. To fully restore everything in iTunes, these files must be restored in addition to your actual music and video files.
- If you store any of your iTunes content outside the default iTunes folder, note those locations. You will also need to select those folders to restore.
To simplify backup and restore, it's a good idea to consolidate your iTunes library.
Restore your iTunes folder
In CrashPlan app version 4.8.4 and later, the Restore tab is updated. For instructions, see Restore files from the CrashPlan app version 4.8.4 and later.
To locate and restore your iTunes files:
- Open the CrashPlan app.
- Click Restore.
- Locate and select your iTunes folder. If you store any of your iTunes files outside the default iTunes folder, select those folders as well.
The default location of your iTunes folder varies depending on your operating system (see below). If you changed the location of your iTunes folder, visit Apple support to learn where your iTunes files are located.
- OS X: /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes
- Windows 7 or 8: C:\Users\<username>\My Music\iTunes\
- Windows Vista: C:\Users\<username>\Music\iTunes\
- Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
- Click Desktop to change the restore location to original location.
Did you replace your computer?
We typically recommend restoring your files to their original locations. However, if you recently replaced your computer, your new computer may have a different file structure than the computer where the files were originally backed up (for example, if you changed operating systems or your user name). In this case, you can restore to a specific folder and choose the location on your new computer that is equivalent to the original location. See Download files from the CrashPlan app for more information on restoring to a specific folder.
- Click Restore.
Your download begins immediately. The Restore Status displays the status of your restored files.
Choose your library in iTunes
Once your iTunes folder is restored, use iTunes to choose your restored library.
- If iTunes is already open, close the application.
- Open iTunes while holding down the Option key (OS X) or Shift key (Windows).
The Choose iTunes Library window appears. If it does not appear, exit iTunes and try again.
- Click Choose Library.
- Select the iTunes Library.itl file from the iTunes folder you just restored.
- Click Open.
The iTunes application opens and your iTunes Library is restored.
