Learn the basics
Familiarize yourself with the Code42 console
- Learn the basics of navigating the Code42 console.
- Use the Code42 console to view, manage, monitor, and configure your Code42 environment.
- Apply settings across your Code42 environment.
Test backup and restore
Review backup concepts
- How Backup Works
An explanation of how Code42 for Enterprise analyzes, compresses, encrypts, transmits, and stores data. - Archive Encryption Key Security
An in-depth look at encryption-key options, as well as other important aspects of your backup's security.
Back up files
- Back up your first device.
- Start backup from the Code42 app.
- Learn how backup works and how files are prioritized.
- Adjust settings for optimal speed.
Prevent your computer from going to sleep. - Back up to a second destination.
Back up to an external drive to improve backup redundancy. Local destinations can be used for faster backups and restores.
Restore files
- Restore files from the Code42 app.
- Downloading files from the Code42 app is the most common method for restoring files.
- There are no limits on the amount of data that can be restored at one time with the app.
- Restore files from the web.
- Quickly access files backed up to a cloud destination using the Code42 console.
- Administrators can configure a data limit for web restores (250 MB by default).
In addition, administrators with appropriate permissions can restore files for end users; see Manage your Code42 environment for more information.
Configure your Code42 environment
Your Code42 environment is structured into organizations, users, and devices. This hierarchy lets you configure and manage settings and data across job functions and in accordance with regulatory needs. It also gives you the ability to quickly address potential data security concerns and legal mandates with minimal disruption to your users.
Add organizations
- Create organizations to group users and apply shared settings.
- Sort users into groups and apply shared settings to their devices.
- An organization can contain child organizations, and an organization can exist without containing any users.
- Configure default settings for all organizations.
Define default settings, such as backup frequency, available destinations, and data retention policies for all organizations. - Configure settings for individual organizations.
Define unique settings, such as backup frequency, available destinations, and data retention policies for each organization as needed.
Configure backup policies
- Determine what backup policies are appropriate for your Code42 environment.
- Review considerations for controlling what, how, and where data is backed up.
- Review relevant case studies for tuning your Code42 environment.
- Configure device backup settings.
Define what, how, and where data is backed up. - Include or exclude files from backup.
Refine what data is backed up using file extensions, filename patterns, substitution variables, and regular expressions. - Configure network overrides.
- Control network limits between source devices and destinations.
- Independent bandwidth throttle settings exist for both LAN and WAN.
Add users
Add users from the Code42 console.
- Add individual users manually.
- Create multiple users at once by uploading a text file.
- Invite multiple users by sending an email invite. Invited users create their accounts from the Code42 console.
Deploy the Code42 app
- Review the Code42 app deployment options.
- If you have devices shared by multiple users, determine the installation type for those devices:
- Install the Code42 app per user on a shared device to use a separate archive for each user and limit restores to only the user who owns the data.
- Install the Code42 app for everyone on a shared device to use a single archive for the users and allow all users on the device to restore the data.
- Streamline deployment in your environment by predefining settings in the Code42 app.
Configure file activity monitoring
- Set up endpoint monitoring.
Monitor file activity on each device in real time to detect file exfiltration. - Configure activity profiles.
Define profiles in Code42 Security Center to generate an email notification when a user exceeds a defined file activity threshold. - Configure Legal Hold.
If you suspect employees in your company of malicious file activity, use Legal Hold to collect their files as evidence. The resulting gathered files can be used in legal proceedings if needed.
Adjust memory settings
If you have a user whose backup selection exceeds 1 TB of storage (or 1 million files), we recommend you ask the user to adjust Code42 app settings to reduce the amount of memory required for backup.
Configure authentication and directory services
- Review options for user authentication and authorization.
- Integrate existing LDAP authentication with your Code42 environment.
Configure LDAP to allow users to sign in with their directory credentials. - Configure advanced LDAP integration to automate user management.
- Automatically activate or deactivate users.
- Automatically assign users to a specified organization.
- Automatically assign roles to users.
- Configure single-sign on (SSO).
SSO is an authentication method that allows a user to use the same credentials to sign in to multiple applications. - Configure RADIUS two-factor authentication.
Two-factor authentication enhances security by requiring users to enter a single-use code in addition to their username and password.
Back up Code42 server database dumps
Use SFTP to back up Code42 server database dumps to another location.
- Daily database dumps are stored on each store point.
- We recommend backing up the database dumps to a separate location as part of a disaster recovery plan.
Harden security
Enhance the security of your Code42 environment.
- Set archive encryption key security.
Use the default level of archive encryption key security and lock it so that users cannot change it. - Change the Code42 server internal database password.
Alter the password of your on-premises authority server's internal H2 database from the one assigned at installation. - Configure denial-of-service filter settings.
Set up a denial-of-service filter (DoSFilter) to stop requests that exceed a defined threshold. - Configure the CORS domain allowlist for web applications.
Restrict outside access to your Code42 server to only those requests originating from approved domains. - Configure TLS strict certificate validation.
Require certificate validation to defend against man-in-the-middle attacks. - Disable data key sharing.
Stop sharing data keys with storage servers if you store archives only in the Code42 cloud. - Disable older protocols and cipher suites.
Stop using older SSL/TLS security protocols and cipher suites that are known to possess security vulnerabilities. - Enforce HTTPS access.
Restrict access to your Code42 environment to browsers using the HTTPS protocol.
Manage your Code42 environment
Once your Code42 environment is configured and deployed, you can use the Code42 console to monitor user activity and manage access and retention of data.
Restore files for users
Restore users' files from the administration console.
- Restore files for other users as an administrator.
- Restore to a zip file on your computer.
- "Push" a restore to the user's device.
Replace a computer or hard drive
- Replace a computer or hard drive.
- Restore all files to the new device.
- Transfer the previous computer's settings and backup archive(s).
- Migrate to Windows 10.
- Use Code42 for Enterprise as part of a safe, secure, and reliable migration to Windows 10 from older Windows operating systems which are past their official end of support.
- (Optional) Automate the restore process of migration using the Code42 API.
Grant and remove access
- Review blocking, deactivating, and deauthorizing concepts.
- Consider use cases for restricting access to data.
- Take action to secure lost or stolen devices.
- Deactivate and reactivate users and devices.
