Overview

Note: If your business uses perpetual licenses purchased in 2012 or earlier, refer to our legacy enterprise licensing article instead.
License model
Annual user licensing is the standard licensing model for all Code42 environments running Code42 for Enterprise version 3.5 or later.
If you have questions about these licensing guidelines, please contact Sales.
CrashPlan
Annual user licenses
An annual user license is like a subscription for your users. For the duration of the license period, your users can back up, restore, and receive support and maintenance on up to four devices. The license period begins on the date purchased.
Support & Maintenance | Beginning of License Period | Purchasing |
---|---|---|
Support and maintenance are included in annual licenses. As long as your users have active annual licenses, you are able to upgrade your Code42 environment and receive support. | Annual user licenses begin their term on the date of purchase. If you add more user licenses to your environment on a later date, the new user licenses expire on a different date than the original user licenses. |
You can purchase up to 250 CrashPlan user licenses directly from Licensing in your Code42 console. If you need more than 250 licenses, please contact Sales. |
For example, if you purchase ten CrashPlan user licenses for one year, ten users can back up to or restore from any of your destinations for one year. Once these ten licenses expire, the users cannot back up or restore until you purchase and apply a new license.
Evaluation user accounts
An evaluation user account is a free evaluation period for new user accounts. Evaluation user accounts allow you to add new users to your Code42 environment without waiting for licenses to be purchased and applied.
CrashPlan evaluation user accounts can back up and restore without an active annual license for up to 30 days. The evaluation period begins when the user account is created.
After 30 days, an administrator must purchase and apply an annual license in order for evaluation users to back up or restore.
Code42 Security Center
Annual license
An annual license for Code42 Security Center is a subscription to use additional security-focused functionality on your existing, licensed devices. Security Center uses a single license that applies to all users in your Code42 environment. You cannot license only a subset of your users for Security Center.
Security Center licensing requires an existing Code42 for Enterprise license. You cannot purchase a Security Center license without a Code42 for Enterprise license.
Support & Maintenance | Beginning of License Period | Purchasing |
---|---|---|
Support and maintenance are included in your existing Code42 for Enterprise licensing. There are no changes for support and maintenance with a Security Center license. | Code42 works with you to coordinate your Security Center licensing period with your existing Code42 for Enterprise licensing periods. |
License consumption
All users associated with one or more archives require an annual user license.
- For CrashPlan, a user is associated with backup archives that contain data from the user's devices. If the Code42 app is installed per user on a device, each CrashPlan user on that device requires a separate license.
- Code42 Security Center is licensed for your entire Code42 environment, not for individual users.
The following scenarios provide examples of users who consume a license and those who do not:
Consume A License | Do Not Consume A License |

View your licenses
The Code42 console displays current licensing information with an Internet connection to Code42’s licensing store. This view provides the ability to manage and view the status of your licenses, and also allows you to directly purchase and apply new or renewed licenses.
If your Code42 environment cannot present the licensing interface, your Code42 console will present a basic local licensing interface. Licenses cannot be purchased or renewed directly from this screen; you must visit the Code42 licensing store in a separate browser to purchase a product license key and then return to the licensing screen and apply it.
To use the licensing interface:
- Your authority server must be able to access the internet
- Your Code42 environment must have only subscription-based licenses (i.e., no legacy perpetual licenses)
Environments that do not meet all the criteria above will display the local licensing interface.
