Overview
This reference guide explains the options available on the Code42 console Settings > Device Networks screen. Use the Device Networks screen to set upload limits for devices based on location.
See our Configuring Device Networks tutorial for additional considerations and step-by-step instructions for configuring network-based backup settings.
Device Networks
In the Code42 console, select Settings > Device Networks from the navigation menu on the left to view network-based backup settings.
Item | Description | |
---|---|---|
a | Network-based device backup rates | Enables and disables network-based device backup settings for your entire Code42 environment. Disable this setting to create network sites and configure settings before applying them to user devices. |
b | Create New Site | Displays options for creating a network site, including the site's name, IP addresses, sending limits, and peak/non-peak schedule. |
c | Edit Default | Displays default sending rates for devices connecting from locations not specifically defined in a network site. |
d | Schedule sending limits | Enables and disables scheduled sending limits for all network sites with defined schedules. Disable this setting to configure site schedules before applying them to user devices. |
e | Site name | The name of the network site. Click any row to view and modify the network site's details. |
f | IP Address | Lists the specific IP address, IP range, or subnet to which a user device connects. |
g | Status |
|
h | Sort arrows | Moves the network site up or down in the list. If a device matches more than one network site, it uses the settings for whichever network site appears first in this list. |
i | Delete | Deletes the network site, which removes the settings and sending limits for devices connecting with this network site's IP addresses. |
Default Settings
The default sending rates apply to devices connecting from locations not specifically defined in a network site. The first time you access the Device Networks screen, you are prompted to define the default settings. Default settings must be defined before network-based device backups can be enabled.
To access the default sending limits:
- From the Code42 console, select Settings > Device Networks.
- Select Edit Default.
The Default Settings screen appears.
Item | Description | |
---|---|---|
a | WAN away | Defines the maximum data transfer rate (in Mbps) when the user is away from the device for devices connecting from a routable IP address (WAN connections typically mean the device is not "on your network"). Linux devices always use the away setting. |
b | LAN away | Defines the maximum data transfer rate (in Mbps) when the user is away from the device for devices connecting from a non-routable IP address (LAN connections typically mean the device is “on your network”). Linux devices always use the away setting. |
c | WAN present | Defines the maximum data transfer rate (in Mbps) when the user is present at the device for devices connecting from a routable IP address (WAN connections typically mean the device is not "on your network"). |
d | LAN present | Defines the maximum data transfer rate (in Mbps) when the user is present at the device for devices connecting from a non-routable IP address (LAN connections typically mean the device is “on your network”). |
When setting network sending limits, do not set a rate lower than 0.10 Mbps or 100 Kbps. Rates lower than 0.10 Mbps can prevent devices from communicating with the Code42 server, which can stop backups and future configuration changes. To stop backup entirely, do not adjust sending limits. Instead, you can pause backup or only allow backups at specified times.
Create Network Site and network site details
Creating a new network site and modifying an existing network site present the same set of options.
- To create a new site, select Settings > Device Networks > Create New Site.
- To modify an existing site, select Settings > Device Networks and click the site's row in the Network Sites list.
Item | Description | |
---|---|---|
a | Site name | The name of the network site. This name appears in the list of network sites on the Device Networks screen. |
b | Add IP addresses or ranges | Specifies IP addresses or ranges to add to this network site. |
c | Site description | An optional description of the network site. Add a description to include additional notes and details for each network site. |
d | IP addresses | List of IP addresses defined for this network site. |
e | Delete | Removes the IP address from this network site. |
f | Standard | Standard sending limits apply the same values at all times. When selected, only one set of Away and Present sending limits appears. Peak business hours settings do not appear. |
g | Scheduled | Scheduled sending limits enable you to specify different sending limits for peak and non-peak business hours. Use this option to limit backup traffic when specific networks are busy with higher priority network activity. |
h | Specify peak business days and hours | Defines the days of the week and start and end times for peak business hours. Appears only when Scheduled sending limits are selected. |
i | Set sending limits for peak business hours |
Appears only when Scheduled sending limits are selected. |
j | Set sending limits for non-peak business hours |
|
k | Enable Network Site |
Enables or disables the settings for this network site.
When editing an existing network site, the Enable Network Site switch appears at the top of the page. |
l | Add Site |
Saves these settings and adds the network site. When editing an existing network site, the button appears as Update Site. |
