Overview

The Devices page displays a list of all devices within your Code42 environment.

Devices

The Devices screens display information about the devices in your Code42 environment. From Active Devices, you can:

  • Add new devices
  • Click a device name to display that device's details and settings
  • Click the check box next to a device's name to perform actions on the selected device
Devices with multiple entries
A single device is displayed multiple times if the Code42 app is installed per user for multiple user accounts.

Active

(Versions 6.5 and later only)

Displays all active devices.
b

Deactivated

(Versions 6.5 and later only)

Displays all deactivated devices.

Backup Alerts

(Versions 6.5 and later only)

Displays all devices with an alert status.
d Action menu Contains actions that you can apply to selected items or the entire list.
e Add a new device Download the Code42 app installer for the platform you select.
f Run a Device Report Opens the Reporting web app and runs the device status report for the devices shown.
g Select all Selects all the devices in the list.
h Name

Device name.
The sort arrow indicates sort order. Click the arrow to switch between ascending or descending.

Devices with multiple entries
A single device is displayed multiple times if the Code42 app is installed per user for multiple user accounts.

i OS Operating system for this device.
Click to view device's details.
j Online Indicates whether or not this computer is connected to an online destination. Colors represent status:
  • Green - connected
  • Gray - not connected

k Stored

Total amount of data backed up for this device.

l Alerts

Device alert status:

  • OK - Device backup: recent
  • WarningBackupAlert - Device backup: warning threshold
  • CriticalBackupAlert - Device backup: critical threshold

Warning and critical thresholds can be configured at Settings > Server, or in Organization Details.

If a device is backing up to multiple destinations, the overview shows the most severe color. See more details by selecting the device.

m Last Backup Activity Amount of time since any backup activity from this device took place.

n Restore Restore files for the selected device.
Click to view web restore.

Action menu

Command Description

Show Active

(Version 6.0.x only)

Displays all active devices. Not available when active devices are currently displayed.

Show Deactivated

(Version 6.0.x only)

Displays all deactivated devices. Not available when deactivated devices are currently displayed.

Show Alerts

(Versions 6.0.x only)

Displays all devices with an alert status.
Pause Backup Pauses backup for a selected device.
Resume Backup Resumes a backup that has been paused for a selected device.
Restart Backup Engine Restarts the backup engine for a selected device.
Verify File Selection Trigger the file selection verification scan to begin immediately for a selected device.
Block

Signs the user out of the selected device(s) and prevents future sign-in until the device is unblocked. Back up continues and archives remain active and stored. This option is not available if the selected user is already blocked.

Unblock Unblock a blocked user. This option is only available if the selected user is currently blocked.
Export All Export selected item to CSV file. If no user is selected, all users in the list are exported.
Print

Print a list of currently selected users. If no user is selected, all users in the list are printed.

Permissions to perform actions

The following actions can be performed only by users with roles that have the system.command_restricted permission (All Org Admin, All Org Manager, Org Admin, and SYSADMIN):

  • Pause Backup
  • Resume Backup
  • Restart Backup Engine
  • Scan Folders

You can also assign the system.command_restricted permission to a custom role.

Add a new device

After selecting Add A New Device from Devices, instructions for downloading the Code42 app appear. Click Yes, Continue to proceed to App Downloads.

CSV export

Export all visible list items to a CSV file by selecting action menu > Export All. If no device is selected, all devices in the list are exported. The following attributes are exported to the CSV file.

Field Description
computerId Identification number for the device.
name Device's name.
guid Globally Unique Identifier for the device.
status Active, deauthorized, deactivated, or blocked
active TRUE: Device is active
FALSE: Device is deactivated
blocked TRUE: Device is blocked
FALSE: Device is not blocked
alertState Backup alert state of this device.
userId Identification number of the device's user.
orgId Identification number of the device's organization.
lastConnected Time when the device last connected to the authority server.
osName Operating system of the device.
osVersion Version of the operating system of the device.
osArch Architecture of the device.
address IP address that the Code42 app last reported to the authority server.
remoteAddress

CrashPlan for Small Business (previously CrashPlan PRO): Address the Code42 cloud sees for this device.

Code42 for Enterprise: Device's IP address from your master server's perspective.

javaVersion Version of Java that the Code42 app uses on this device.
timeZone Time zone the device last reported to the authority server.
displayVersion Version number for the device's installation of the Code42 app.
service Indicates which service the device is using.
targetComputerId Identification number of the device used for computer-to-computer backup.
targetComputerGuid Globally Unique Identifier for the device used for computer-to-computer backup.
targetComputerName Name of the backup destination of the device used for computer-to-computer backup.
targetComputerOsName Operating system for the device used for computer-to-computer backup.
targetComputerType Type of device used for computer-to-computer backup. This is either a SERVER or DEVICE.
selectedFiles Total number of files selected for backup from this device.
selectedBytes

Total number of bytes selected for backup.

todoFiles

Total number files remaining to back up.

todoBytes

Total bytes of data remaining to back up.

archiveBytes

Total bytes the archive occupies on disk.

billableBytes Amount of data that is billable.
lastActivity Time since the device sent any backup data to the specified destination.
lastCompleted Time since the device last completed a backup to the specified destination.
lastConnected Time when this device last connected to a storage destination.
This field differs from the first instance of lastConnected returned in the CSV export, which indicates the time when the device last connected to the authority server.
using

TRUE: An archive for the device exists in the Code42 environment.

FALSE: No archive exists for the device in the Code42 environment.

targetAlertState Backup alert state for the device used for computer-to-computer backup.
percentComplete Percentage of backup that is complete.
userUid Unique identifier of the user.
computerExtRef Customer-provided reference for the device.

Device details

You can access device details by clicking a device in the Devices list, or by selecting a device in the User Detail View. The details for a Code42 for Enterprise device are described below.

Note: There is an action menu for the device (e) and another action menu for individual archives (s), each with a unique set of commands.

Item Description
a Operating system Displays this device's operating system. The mouseover displays operating system version.
b Device name Name for this device. Go to Action menu > Edit > General or to the Code42 app to update.
c GUID Globally Unique Identifier for this device.
d Username The username for the user that owns the displayed device.
Click to view the User Detail pane.
e Action menu (device) The action menu displays the actions that you can perform on this device.
f Connection Status Time since this device last connected to the authority server.
g IP Address The IP address the Code42 app last reported to the authority server (as reported by the device's operating system).
h Restores The number of restores initiated for files backed up from the displayed device.

i Version Version number for the device's installation of the Code42 app.
j Date Created Date the device was created within the system.
k Profile Backup
(Windows only)
Date of the last Windows user profile backup.
l Destination Name of the backup destination. The icon next to the destination name indicates whether the destination is a cloud destination (cloud icon), a device location (computer icon) or a local folder destination (hard drive icon).
m Store point The store point where the backup archive resides.

n Selected Amount of data on this device that is selected for backup
o Backup Status

Progress bar representing the amount of data backed up and the amount remaining.

 

Progress bar colors represent alert state:

  • Green - Recent backup has occurred
  • Yellow - warning state
  • Red - critical state

Warning and critical states are determined by reporting settings.

p Last Activity The time since this device sent any backup data to the specified destination.
q Completed The time since this device last completed a backup to the specified destination.
r Restore Displays Restore window in which you can select the files / folders that you want to restore from this archive. View tutorial for additional information.
s Archive action menu Actions or commands you can perform on the specified backup archive.
t Used Storage Total amount of data stored in this device's backup archive at the specified destination.
u Settings Read-only display of device settings for the selected device. Go to Action menu > Edit to change settings for this device.

Device action menu

From the action menu for a device, you can perform the following tasks.

Command Description
Edit Displays Device Settings where you can edit settings for this device.
Upgrade Initiate the upgrade for this device. The manual upgrade feature is intended for testing the Code42 app upgrade prior to upgrading all of your devices. Once a manual upgrade has been started, it cannot be canceled. Status information during the upgrade is displayed on the device. Additional information on testing the upgrade is available in the upgrade instructions for each specific version and in Best practices for upgrading devices (Code42 server version 5.2.x and earlier).

This action is available only when a Code42 app upgrade is available and device auto-upgrades is disabled.

View Archives Opens the Archive List view, which displays information about the archives associated with this device.

Search for Files

Opens the File Search web app in a new tab. The search form is pre-populated with the device's GUID.
This action is available only if you are authorized to use the File Search web app.

Deactivate Deactivate device. This action is only available if the device is currently active. Deactivation stops user backups.
Activate Activate a device that is currently deactivated.
Block Signs out the user and prevents future sign-in for this device until the device is unblocked. Backup continues and archives remain active and stored. Not available when the selected user is currently blocked.
Unblock Unblock a currently blocked device. Only available when the selected device is blocked.
Adopt a Computer Designate that this device should assume the backup archive and GUID of another device. View tutorial for additional information.
Deauthorize Deauthorize this device.
Pause Backup Pauses backup for a selected device.
Resume Backup Resumes a backup that has been paused for a selected device.
Restart Backup Engine Restarts the backup engine for a selected device.
Verify File Selection Scan folders for file changes and deleted files.
Retrieve Logs Displays log screen. You can choose from a list of logs.
Send Logs Used in response to a request from our Customer Champions to send your log files, this action displays a window in which you can enter your support ticket. When you click send, the necessary log files are sent to support with the associated support ticket number.
Print

Print a list of currently selected users. If no user is selected, all users in the list are exported.

Archive action menu

From the archive action menu on the Device Details page, you can do the following:

Command Description
Migrate Archive Moves backup archives onto a different store point. You have the option to specify which store point should hold the archive data.
Maintain Archive Reclaims space in the backup archive by immediately applying file selection or retention policy changes (such as how many versions to keep and how long to keep deleted files). Overrides the Maintain archives… interval.
Reset Archive Removes backup data at this destination that originated from this device. If this device continues to back up to this destination, the archive will restart from the beginning.
Resume Backup Resumes a backup that has been paused for a selected device.
Pause Backup Pauses backup for a selected device.

Settings

View this device's general, backup, account, and security settings. You can also view this device's backup history.

History

If the device is online and the Code42 app is running, you can view the device's history in the console from this screen.

History is only available on an authority server to users with the SYSADMIN or System Administrator user roles.

a External Reference Displays optional external reference information, such as a serial number, asset tag, employee ID, or help desk issue ID.
b Notes Displays optional descriptive information.

Restore History

View the Restore History by clicking the number of restores from the Code42 for Enterprise Device Details.

a Action menu Includes options to Print or Export (as CSV) the restore information.
b Operating System Displays the operating system of the device that received the restored data.
c User User whose data was restored. A red warning icon Warning Icon will appear if another user initiated the restore (via restoring from the administration console, for example).
d Restore To Device that received the restored data.
e # Files Number of files that were restored.
f Size Total size of the restored files.
g Transfer Rate Speed in Mbps of the file restoration.
h Restore Date Date and time the restoration occurred.
i Duration Total time taken to restore the files.

CSV export

Export all visible list items to a CSV file by selecting Action menu > Export All. If no device is selected, all devices in the list are exported. The following attributes are exported to the CSV file.

deviceName Name of device that received the restored data.
numFiles Number of files that were restored.
numBytes Total size of the files restored.
transferRateBytesPerSecond Speed in Mbps of restore job.
startDate Date the restore started.
endDate Date the restore finished.
acceptingDeviceId ID of the device that received the restored data.
acceptingDeviceName Name of device that received the restored data.
AcceptingDeviceOsName Operating system of the device that received the restored data.
acceptingDeviceOsVersion Version of the operating system of the device that received the restored data.
acceptingType Type of device.
acceptingUserFirstName First name of the user whose device accepted the restored data.
acceptingUserId ID of the user whose device accepted the restored data.
acceptingUserLastName Last name of the user whose device accepted the restored data.
acceptingUsername User name of the user whose device accepted the restored data.
completedDate The date the restore finished.
rateByesPerSecond Speed in Mbps of restore job.
requestingUserId ID of the user who requested the restore.
restoreBytes Total bytes restored.
restoreFiles Number of files restored.
restoreId ID of the restore job.
sourceOrgId ID of the organization where the restored files orginated.
sourceUserId ID of the user whose files were restored.
