Overview
The Code42 Legal Hold web app allows your legal team to easily create and manage legal holds, place users (custodians) in your Code42 environment under a legal hold, and collect data from legal holds. See the Legal Hold configuration guide for more guidance on using the Legal Hold web app.
To access the Legal Hold web app, select Legal Hold from the application selector in the Code42 console toolbar.
Note: You must have an on-premises master server to access the Legal Hold web app.
All Legal Holds
All Legal Holds lists the legal holds in your Code42 environment. It allows you to:
- View all legal holds
- Filter the list of legal holds by status
- Deactivate a legal hold

f | Status | Status of the legal hold (active or inactive). Click to sort by status. |
g | Number of Custodians | Number of custodians in the legal hold. Click to sort by number of custodians. |

Name of a legal hold. Click to view details for the legal hold. |
i | Deactivate | Deactivates a legal hold, which deletes the legal hold files. See Configure a legal hold for more information. |
Details
From All Legal Holds, click on a legal hold to display Details. It allows you to view and change the following attributes of a legal hold:
- Name
- Description
- Preservation policy
- Reference fields

Deactivates or reactivates the legal hold. Note: Deactivating a legal hold deletes the legal hold files. |

d | Edit General Backup settings | Changes when backups and file verification scans occur for devices in this legal hold. |
e | Backup will run | Sets when backups run. |
f | Verify selection every | Sets when file verification scans run. |
g | Edit File Selection | Changes which files and folders to include and exclude. |
h | Included files | Selects which predefined categories of files and folders to include. |
i | Excluded files | Selects which predefined categories of files and folders to exclude. |
j | Edit Filename Exclusions | Changes filename extensions to exclude from the legal hold. You can use file extensions or regular expressions. |
k | All OS | Sets exclusions applying to all operating systems. |
l | Mac | Sets exclusions applying to Mac OS X devices only. |
m | Windows | Sets exclusions applying to Windows devices only. |
n | Linux | Sets exclusions applying to Linux devices only. |
o | Edit Frequency and Versions | Changes frequency and version settings for devices in this legal hold. |
p | Frequency | Defines how frequently new versions of a file are backed up. |
q | Version retention | Defines the version retention policy. |
r | Edit Advanced Settings | Changes the advanced settings for devices in this legal hold. We recommend that you do not change these settings. |
s | Data de-duplication | Controls data de-duplication rate. |
t | Compression |
Controls how the Code42 service compresses your backup. Compressed backups use less bandwidth and less disk space. Compression does consume some CPU, but not enough to offset overhead due to maxing out your bandwidth or disk. We recommend leaving compression on because you generally have more CPU available than bandwidth or disk space. |
u | Encryption enabled | Enables or disables encryption. |
v | Watch file system in real-time | Enables or disables the Code42 service to constantly monitoring for file changes. |
w | Back up open files | Enables or disables backing up files that are open (in use) at the time of back up. |
x | Edit Reference fields | Changes the External Reference and Notes fields for the legal hold. |
Custodians
The Custodians page in the Legal Hold web app allows you to:
- Place users, also known as custodians, into a legal hold
- Deactivate custodians
- View a list of the custodians within a legal hold
- Collect files from custodians as part of a legal process
Collects files from custodians for data collection.

Data collection
From Custodians, click Get Files to open a web restore window. Follow the standard web restore process with the following modifications:
- Zip file and server filesystem restores are not available.
- You must restore files to a device (push restore).
Activity
Activity displays a timeline and description of important events in a legal hold.
