The web-based management application used to administer the Code42 environment. The administration console is a component of every enterprise server installation and is also available to administrators of public cloud-based solutions such as CrashPlan for Small Business (previously CrashPlan PRO) or CrashPlan PROe cloud.
The process of having one device take over for another device that has been lost, stolen, sold, or reformatted. As in “Adopting a computer.” The adoption process is an optional operation available when CrashPlan detects a new device under an existing account. Adoption allows the new computer to use an existing computer's backup archive, backup file selection and backup settings. It also deactivates the other device so it can longer back up.
An archive contains backup data for a single CrashPlan device or sync and share data for a single plan in SharePlan. Each archive is securely encrypted using an archive encryption key.
Archive key password
Password supplied when you the enable archive key password option for archive encryption. If you have enabled this option, you must supply the archive key password to restore files. See also account password, secured key.
A regularly scheduled task that checks the health of each active archive. Archive maintenance identifies corrupted data and, as needed, requests working versions of the data from endpoints. For CrashPlan archives, archive maintenance removes excess file versions, deleted files, and files no longer selected for backup, according to the file retention settings.
Administrators can trigger archive maintenance manually from the administration console, and users can trigger archive maintenance with the Compact button in the CrashPlan app.
(1) Files that you have saved to another location as a safeguard against loss. Also known as “backup” or “backup archive.”
(2) The operation in which files are sent and stored to another computer or device, as in, “Your backup is in progress.”
The setting that determines how often CrashPlan backs up to your destinations.
A group of files that you want backed up to a specific location or with specific settings.
Devices, users and orgs can be blocked. This process is non-destructive, and no data is lost. Blocking a user or org cascades and affects all of a user's devices, and all of an org's users. Devices that are blocked continue to backup, but blocked users are not able to log in. A blocked user continues to use a seat license.
Storage that resides within a Code42 data center. This represents what is commonly known as Code42's public cloud.
Term encompassing all components of a CrashPlan PROe or SharePlan environment, with one authority master server. Components may include: enterprise servers, administration console, CrashPlan web app, SharePlan web app, organizations, users, devices. Example usage: Go to Settings > Security > LDAP to enable LDAP integration for your Code42 environment.
A set of services that power all Code42 products, components, and deployment models. These services include: storage, transport, directory, identity, policy, and search. See Code42 Platform Solutions for additional details.
Temporary holding state for archives after they are deactivated, but before they expire and are permanently deleted. This is analogous to the period when a deleted file remains in the Recycle Bin or the Trash. Users who have backup archives in cold storage consume a user license. Administrators can retrieve archives from cold storage if the archives were backed up to a private cloud or hybrid cloud destination.
The final step during the archive maintenance process. Compact reclaims disk space by removing from the backup archive data controlled by device settings: files no longer selected for backup, file versions beyond what the device's versioning settings allow, or deleted files older than allowed.
The process of transforming information into fewer bits so that it takes less space and speeds up transmission. By default, CrashPlan PROe compresses information before sending it for backup, which increases the overall backup speed. After CrashPlan identifies the unique data in a file, it breaks the data into pieces and compresses each piece. If the compressed piece is smaller than the original, the compressed piece is backed up. If the compressed piece is not smaller, the original data will be backed up. CrashPlan PROe does not compress certain types of files, such as files ending in .zip.
The CrashPlan service or engine that performs all backup operations in the background on a device running the CrashPlan app.
Encryption key that is user-created (using the Passphrase or Generate options) and is used instead of the encryption key generated by the CrashPlan app. This encryption security option offers the greatest security because the custom key never leaves the source computer. It also greatly increases user responsibility; there is no way to recover a backup if the custom key is lost or forgotten. CrashPlan Customer Champions have no way to assist with custom key recovery.
Daily job that collects a snapshot of backup archive size for each backup archive, dumps the server's database to all store points, sends admin alerts and reports, and removes backup archives that have exceeded the cold storage retention period.
Main page of the administration console. Displays rolled up stats and graphs across all organizations.
Automatic process ensuring that the amount of disk space on each server within a destination is roughly equal.
Process in which duplicate files and parts of files are automatically identified and transmitted and stored only once. Data de-duplication occurs per source device on the source device.
A copy of the Code42 environment's internal database. Each enterprise server "dumps" a copy of its internal database to the file system on that enterprise server as part of scheduled daily services.
Applies to devices, users, orgs, and plans. Deactivation stops backup and causes associated archives to be placed into cold storage and eventually deleted. Licenses are not immediately freed by deactivation.
Can be applied to devices only. Causes the CrashPlan app on the affected device to be logged out. This process is non-destructive, and no data is deleted. The user of the device will be able to log in again. A deauthorized device continues to use a seat license.
(1) General term applied to locations to which your files are backed up: your server, an external drive, or with online hosted storage.
(2) Highest level in the Code42 environment storage hierarchy. A named grouping of enterprise servers and store points on a single LAN or at a single data center.
Represents a single computer or mobile device within your Code42 environment, and is uniquely identified by its GUID. A device is always associated with a single user.
The process of encoding data so no unauthorized persons can read the data.
A piece of information that a cryptographic algorithm uses to encrypt data.
Archive encryption upgraded from the standard security option. There are two enhanced security options: Archive key password and custom key.
A server that runs the Code42 environment software, which is the back end for CrashPlan and SharePlan. An enterprise server can be one of two types: master server or storage server.
Introduced in version 3.6.1. Once an archive has been in cold storage for the time of its cold storage retention period, the archive expires. Archive expiration represents a short, additional buffer between recoverable archives and permanent deletion. Expired archives are kept for 20 days (by default), then permanently deleted.
The device's public IP address as seen by the master server.
A gigabyte equals 109 or 1,000,000,000 bytes.
(1) Globally Unique IDentifier. A number generated and assigned to each device, plan and enterprise server in your Code42 environment. Used by CrashPlan to associate each device with its backup archive. Used by SharePlan to identify each unique plan.
(2) A CrashPlan app command line command for viewing and manipulating the GUID value for the current device.
(1) Data storage within both Code42's secure public cloud and an on-premises private cloud.
(2) A type of CrashPlan PROe or SharePlan deployment in which endpoint data is stored in a combination of Code42's secure public cloud and an on-premises private cloud.
The process of saving only the changes in files since the last backup.
The very first backup performed on a specific source device. The initial backup of selected files is significantly longer than subsequent, incremental backups. see also: incremental backups
The IP address the operating system reports to the desktop for a particular device.
The internal database used to index the archives that store data for CrashPlan and SharePlan. The internal database is essential for performing any actions on the archives, including restoring data. It also stores user account information.
The default account with the SYSADMIN role that is created when you install your enterprise server. The username for this account can be changed, but the account itself cannot be deleted or deactivated.
A type of backup destination that is directly attached to the source device, e.g. a directory on the file system or an external drive.
A server appliance that uses enterprise-grade hardware selected by Code42 and runs the Code42 enterprise server software. Managed appliances are remotely monitored and managed by Code42 and can be purchased from Code42 or a Code42-authorized agent.
Managed Private Cloud
On-premises (private cloud) deployment strategy where Code42 managed appliance(s) are utilized. The unique combination of Code42 software, hardware, and services provide customers with a predictable solution.
Master license key
Approximately 150-character encrypted string that activates your enterprise server installs. Identifies your enterprise server(s) as belonging to your company or organization.
A type of enterprise server. If you have only one server in your Code42 environment, it is a master server. The master server:
- may store CrashPlan or SharePlan archives
- maintains the authoritative database for licensing and authentication of all CrashPlan and SharePlan users
- performs all new user authorization and creation; handles all business-level reporting and alerts
- knows about all devices, users, plans and backups on all servers
- enables web restore capabilities for CrashPlan
- performs LDAP lookups (if enabled)
- escrows encryption keys for devices not using a custom key
Multi-user plans can sync with multiple users and devices. A multi-user plan can have one user, many users, or no users. All user-created plans are multi-user plans. Administrators can create multi-user plans from the administration console.
A location that is outside the facility that contains the devices.
On-premises hardware is operated from a customer-controlled location, not from any Code42-controlled data center.
A type of backup in which files are transmitted over the Internet or WAN. In the CrashPlan app, all server-based destinations are considered online destinations.
A backup location that is in the same facility as the source devices.
A group of users. You can define many settings at the organization level, allowing you to configure organizations with different settings for a variety of purposes. Each user can belong to only one organization. An organization can contain child organizations, and an organization can exist without containing any users.
A personal plan syncs SharePlan data with all the user's SharePlan devices. A personal plan is automatically created for each SharePlan user when the user first signs in. Personal plans are always associated with exactly one user.
Data is stored in plans to be shared between SharePlan users and devices. Data for each plan is stored on the enterprise server in an archive. There are two types of plans: personal plans and multi-user plans.
(1) Data storage within on-premises enterprise server(s) (not in a Code42-controlled data center). Private clouds can be hosted on managed appliances or other hardware running the enterprise server software.
(2) A type of CrashPlan PROe or SharePlan deployment in which all endpoint data is stored on-premises.
Product license key
Approximately 100-character encrypted string that adds additional user licenses and support, tied to your Master License Key.
A destination hosted by one company on behalf of another. By definition, both companies must have on-premises master servers. This scenario enables remote data storage but prevents either company from viewing or decrypting the other’s data.
(1) Data storage within Code42's secure data centers.
(2) A type of CrashPlan PROe or SharePlan deployment in which endpoint data is stored in Code42's secure data centers.
Public cloud with keys on-premises
A specific type of public cloud deployment in which all endpoint data is stored in Code42's secure data centers, but encryption keys are stored on an on-premises master server.
The process of backing up files immediately after the files have been created or changed. Real-time backup protects you from loss that might occur if backups are scheduled only at specific times.
16-character string that is tied to your Master License Key. The Registration Key is included on the Master License Key email and is required for placing orders for seats or support. Each organization also has a unique Registration Key derived from the Master License Key.
The process of retrieving lost files. Restoring makes it possible for you to avoid the effort of recreating data or starting from scratch, allowing you or your business to move forward with minimal disruption.
A version of a user's archive encryption key that is encrypted with the user's account password (default security) or archive key password (enhanced security).
A company that runs Code42 software and hosts storage space for another company that has an on-premises master server. When a company signs up for storage in the public cloud and holds its keys on premises, Code42 is the storage provider.
A type of enterprise server. A storage server is used only for storage in multi-server deployments. A storage server cannot function as a failover for a master server. A storage server depends on user authorization provided by the master server.
A storage location within a server that can store archives. The lowest level in the Code42 environment storage hierarchy.
A process where the source and destination compare what files are actually stored on the destination vs what files the source has sent to the destination.
An attribute that defines functions and features of the enterprise server. System properties are usually enabled, disabled, or configured from the administration console command-line.
Represents a single account within your Code42 environment. A user account has a single set of login credentials (username and password) and a single encryption key for all backups. A user always belongs to one (and only one) organization.
The ability to specify the rules for removing from your backup archive the versions of files that you no longer care about. Removing these no longer relevant versions can play a big role in managing the size of your backup archive. In CrashPlan, version retention means keeping more of your more recent versions and fewer of the older ones.
The ability to restore files from the administration console and download files from the web browser. Web restore is a secondary method of restoring files.
