Enterprise Licensing

Applies to:
  • CrashPlan PROe
This enterprise licensing article applies to CrashPlan PROe version 3.5 and later. These versions use per-user licensing. CrashPlan PROe versions 3.4.x and earlier handle licenses on a per-device basis. For licensing information on these versions, refer to Enterprise Legacy Licensing. Add purchased licenses to your environment from the administration console under Licensing > Action Menu > Add product license key.

Licensing models

Beginning with CrashPlan PROe version 3.5.1, your Code42 environment is licensed on a per-user basis. All users that have protected data consume a user license. This includes all users with backup archives in cold storage, but does not include the "admin" account that is created upon installation of the application.

Annual user licenses

Annual user licensing is the standard licensing model for all Code42 environments running CrashPlan PROe version 3.5 or later.

  • An annual user license is like a subscription. Your users are licensed for backup, restore, and support and maintenance for the duration of the license period, beginning on the date of purchase. For example, if you purchase ten user licenses for one year, ten users can back up to or restore from any of your destinations for one year. Once a user's license expires, the user cannot back up or restore until you refresh the license.
  • Support and maintenance are fully included in user licenses. As long as your users have active licenses, you are able to upgrade your Code42 environment and receive support.
  • Annual user licenses begin their term on the date of purchase. If you add more user licenses to your environment on a later date, the new user licenses expire on a different date than the original user licenses.
  • You can purchase up to 250 user licenses directly from our store. If you need more than 250 licenses, please contact Sales.

If you have additional questions about user-based licensing, please visit our Version 3.4.X To 3.5.1.1 Licensing Model FAQ or contact Sales.

Evaluation user accounts

An evaluation user account is a free evaluation period for new user accounts. Evaluation user accounts allow you to onboard new users and start backing up without waiting for procurement to obtain additional licenses. New users can back up in evaluation mode (without an active license) for up to 30 days following user account creation. After a user account is 30 days old, the user must have an active license in order to back up or restore.

Perpetual licenses

Perpetual licensing is a nonstandard licensing model for all Code42 environments running CrashPlan PROe version 3.5. If your business requires a perpetual licensing model, please contact your sales representative or contact Sales to discuss purchase options.

  • Perpetual licenses include one year of support and maintenance with initial purchase.
  • Support and maintenance coverage entitles you to software upgrades and technical support from our Customer Champions team. If support and maintenance licenses expire, your environment continues to function normally, including all backup and restore operations. However, you must renew your support and maintenance to receive assistance from Code42's Customer Champion team or if you want to upgrade your Code42 environment to a newer version.
  • Support and maintenance lapses:
    • If your support and maintenance has lapsed for up to 45 days, you must pay to backfill or “catch up” your support and maintenance to the current date, in addition to purchasing support and maintenance for the desired length going forward.
    • If your support and maintenance has lapsed for more than 45 days, you must purchase annual user licenses.
  • Support and maintenance time is spread across all of the current perpetual licenses. This is done to ensure that all users in the environment have the exact same support and maintenance expiration date.
    • For example, if you have 100 users backing up and you purchase and apply one year of coverage for 50 users, that support and maintenance license covers all 100 of your users for six months.

Annual licenses compared to perpetual licenses

The graphic below illustrates how the different license types behave with regard to backup, restore, support, and maintenance.

With annual licenses: backup, restore, support, and maintenance are included with the license for the duration of the license.

With perpetual licenses: users are able to back up and restore forever, but support and maintenance (including software upgrades) are only included for the first year. All users licensed under perpetual licenses must be current on support and maintenance in order to upgrade their environment. Additional support and maintenance may be purchased for existing perpetual licenses from our store.

The Licensing screens display all information about user licenses in your Code42 environment. Tabs are displayed if you have both subscription-based and perpetual licenses. Code42 environments with only one type of license see only the information for that type of license. If you have no purchased licenses, the screen defaults to the Subscriptions view.
