Reassigning Archives From An Inaccessible Storepoint

Applies to:
  • CrashPlan PROe
This tutorial explains how to reassign user archives from a store point that has become inaccessible to an alternative store point. This is necessary when a store point is no longer available due to hard drive failure, store point failure, or other causes. In this case, the normal archive migration process will not work.

Considerations

Reassigning user archives to a new store point from a non-functional or unavailable store point will cause the backup to start over. As a result of abandoning the existing archive, certain archival data will be lost:

  • version history
  • files in the archive that were deleted from the endpoint after being backed up

Before You Begin

Since data loss is possible, take all troubleshooting measures possible to recover the inaccessible store point before starting this process. Also, good planning can prevent unexpected hardware and network events and changes that may take an enterprise server or store point offline.

You can contact our Customer Champions if you have questions about recovering your inaccessible store point.

Steps

Step 1: Reject New Devices On The Inaccessible Store Point

Navigate to Destinations>Store Points>Store Point Details (for the inaccessible store point), then choose Reject New Devices from the action menu:

Reject New Devices on inaccessible store point

Step 2: Disable Balancing On The Inaccessible Store Point

On the inaccessible store point, choose Disable Balancing from the action menu:

Disable balancing on the inaccessible store point

Step 3: Accept New Devices On The Replacement Store Point

Navigate to Destinations>Store Points>Store Point Details (for the store point to which the archives and devices will be reassigned), then choose Accept New Devices from the action menu:

Accept new devices on the good store point

Step 4: Enable Balancing On The Replacement Store Point

On the replacement store point, choose Enable Balancing from the action menu:

Enable balancing on the good store point

Step 5: Navigate To Stranded Archives On The Inaccessible Store Point

Go to Destinations>Store Points:

List of store points

Click on the value under the Stored column for the dead store point. You will navigate to a screen containing the stranded archives that are available for reassignment:

List of stranded archives and devices

Step 6: Reassign Archives

Select the archives you wish to reassign, then choose Reassign Archive from the action menu:
Reassign the archives

Type "Agree" when prompted by the warning message: Warning message regarding reassignment of archives

The message "Archive reassignment started" will briefly appear in the lower left of the administration console:Archive reassignment started

CrashPlan PROe's data balancing engine will reassign the affected GUIDs to any available good store points.

The reassignment process may take several minutes. Once completed, navigate to Destinations>Store Points. Verify that no remaining data is being stored on the inaccessible store point:Verify that archives have moved to good store point and that inaccessible store point is empty

Step 7: Remove The Inaccessible Store Point (Optional)

Once you have verified that the user archives have been moved, and the device GUIDs reassigned to functional store points, you may remove the inaccessible store point:

From Destinations>Store Points>Store Point Details (for the inaccessible store point), choose Remove from the action menu: Remove the inaccessible store point

You will be prompted to confirm that you wish to permanently remove the store point:Confirm store point removal

After you click the Remove button, a message in the lower left of the administration console will confirm that the store point was successfully removed:Successful removal of inaccessible store point

Step 8: Confirm That Devices Can Back Up

To verify that the reassignment process was successful, you may confirm from the CrashPlan app that one of the affected devices is now able to back up. The destination affected by the inaccessible store point should be online (as shown by the green checkmark) and the backup process should be underway or complete:Verifying that an affected CrashPlan client is now able to back up
