    What Is Not Backing Up

    Overview

CrashPlan is intended to back up your user files (pictures, music, documents, etc.), not your operating system and all of your applications.  As a result, CrashPlan excludes certain temporary and system files that often fail to back up or cause problems with backups, and which aren’t necessary to back up anyway.

    Admin Excludes and Hidden Files

Files that CrashPlan excludes from backing up are referred to as admin excludes. You cannot change these settings, but you can add your own exclusions if you’d like. Files that do not appear in the file selection list are referred to as hidden files.

In addition to CrashPlan’s built-in exclusions, we also respect the OS X com_apple_backup_excludeItem metadata, which is commonly used to flag things like iTunes movie rentals (which shouldn't need to be backed up because they're unplayable 24 hours after you rent them anyway).

    Admin Excludes

The files and folders that match the listed patterns are excluded on all platforms and cannot be selected for backup. All patterns are in Java Regular Expression format.
