- CrashPlan for Home
Designed to make minimal demands on your computer's resources, CrashPlan's default settings favor quiet, background operation over outright speed. There are times, however, such as during your initial backup or after adding a large number of files to your backup selection, when you may decide speed is more important.
This article outlines some temporary adjustments that allow backups to be completed more quickly, as well as some items to consider before changing any settings.
- These are temporary adjustments. Once the backup is completed, CrashPlan only uploads the changes made to files, so you can return to the default backup settings and allow CrashPlan to back up continuously and quietly. See How Backup Works for more information.
- Several issues can affect backup speed, including your individual hardware and network components and configuration.
- Even under ideal conditions, the initial upload process can take a while; backup times may range from anywhere to a few days to a month or more, depending on your upload speed and the total size of the files you have selected to back up.
- Results of changing settings may not be immediately apparent. You may need to wait a day or so before noticing improvements.
Before You Begin
- We recommend disabling your computer's default sleep settings for the duration of any large backup job. This allows CrashPlan to run uninterrupted and complete the backup more quickly.
- Configure CrashPlan for multi-destination backup so that backups and restores are always available. Backing up to a local drive will complete much more quickly than backing up over the Internet. Having a completed local backup ensures that your files are safely backed up to one location even as your offsite backup is in process.
If you are experiencing upload speeds that are slower than you expect, there are several things you can adjust in the CrashPlan app to attempt to improve upload speeds. By default, CrashPlan has limits in place to prevent it from using too many system resources. Changing these settings to increase the system resources available to CrashPlan can help speed up your backup.
- Open the CrashPlan app and select Settings > General.
- Increase the percentage of CPU CrashPlan is allowed to use when the user is both away and present. Start by increasing to each to 90 - 100%. You can always scale back if CrashPlan interferes with your work.
Note: In Linux, CrashPlan always uses the "Away" setting.
The CrashPlan app uses keyboard and mouse activity to detect if you are present or away from your computer.
CrashPlan assumes that what you're working on now is most important so prioritizes your most recently changed files and backs them up first.
For CrashPlan for Home subscribers, the default setting is to back up new information every 15 minutes. This offers great protection for backing up your files right away and allows you to easily revert to a previous version of a file. However, it also means that CrashPlan uses some resources to back up frequent versions of your files as you work.
Extending the default backup frequency time allows CrashPlan to work through your files without the the additional workload of backing up multiple versions of your files. The trade off to extending the backup frequency time is that your new files and changes won't be backed up as quickly.
To increase the time between backups:
- From the CrashPlan app, select Settings > Backup (Sets) > Frequency and versions > Configure.
- Change the New version interval to a longer period, such as 8+ hours.
- From the CrashPlan app, select Settings > Network.
- Increase the allowed transfer rate. WAN is for transferring data over the Internet and LAN is for transferring data over your computer's local network. Start by setting the limits to None. If this slows down your network, try dropping it back down to 1 Mbps, or lower if needed.
Advanced users only: Increase the sending message buffer size. Do not adjust the message buffer size if you are on a WAN.
- CrashPlan subscribers share bandwidth when backing up to the cloud. As a result, upload speeds may not match maximum speeds of an individual’s Internet provider.
